Dave Rolph
Senior Conservation Advisor

Background: As Senior Conservation Advisor for The Nature Conservancy’s Washington Chapter David works closely with scientists, private landowners, and public land managers to develop and implement conservation strategies for forested landscapes throughout Washington. A major focus of his current work is managing the science program for the Conservancy’s 7,500 acre Ellsworth Creek forest and watershed restoration project in Willapa Bay. David has worked for the Conservancy since 1988 in both Washington and on Molokai, Hawaii. Prior to his positions with the Conservancy, David worked for the U.S. Forest Service investigating wildlife and forest habitat relationships in Pacific Northwest old-growth coniferous forests and aspen forests of the Rocky Mountains, and studying bald eagles in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. He received a Master’s degree in Forest Resource Management from the University of Washington and is a board member of the Washington State Forest Stewardship Coordinating Committee.

Current Projects/Professional Focus: Currently David’s primary focus is leading a large experimental adaptive management project at the Conservancy’s Ellsworth Creek Preserve, comparing three alternative strategies for restoring late-successional forest systems within an existing young-managed forest landscape. He also facilitates a Pacific Northwest Forest Restoration Cooperative to bring forest managers and scientists together to incrementally improve restoration practices in forested landscapes and identify key questions that require further research.

Fun Fact: If not hiking in areas of natural splendor David most likes to ponder life’s trajectory while riding his mountain bike, body surfing, or standing around the BBQ.
